People with disabilities can be more at-risk from fires in their home. Fire service research shows that people with disabilities are over-represented in fatal fire statistics. But there are simple actions that everyone can take to stay safe from fire at home.
- Check that the smoke alarms in your home are working by using a broom handle to press the smoke alarm test button for 5 seconds, until it beeps.
- Write and practice a home escape plan with everyone in your home, including the people that provide you with formal or informal support.
- Keep looking when you’re cooking. Fires most commonly start in the kitchen due to cooking left unattended.
- Make your home smoke-free. Incorrectly discarded cigarettes are a leading cause of fatal home fires.
- Charge battery powered appliances like laptops, phones on a solid surface like a table and during the day, rather than overnight.
If you can’t’ take these actions yourself, you could ask a family member, friend or support provider to help you.
